About Delta

What kind of qualification is Delta

Three modules, in any order

Delta is made up of three modules. You choose the order and the timing. Each module is certificated separately, so every module you pass counts on its own, and once you have passed all three you can request the overall Delta certificate through your centre.

The same level as a master's degree

Ofqual, the UK qualifications regulator, places all three Delta modules at RQF Level 7 — the same level as a master's degree. Each module carries 20 credits, and some master's programmes accept up to 20 Delta credits per module.

The three modules

What each module covers and how it is assessed

Module 2 can only be taken on a course at an approved Cambridge centre. Module 1 and Module 3 can be taken without a course.

About Delta Module 1

Exam overview

Who it's for

There are no formal entry requirements. Cambridge does recommend an initial teaching qualification such as CELTA and at least a year of English teaching experience. An English level of CEFR C1–C2 or above is recommended, but you do not need to submit any English test score. Delta suits teachers in primary, secondary and adult settings alike, and is open to first-language and non-first-language speakers of English.

After Delta

Delta opens the way to senior teaching and management roles, and leads on to master's programmes in applied linguistics and English language teaching.

There is a 30-minute break between the two papers, so the exam takes 3 hours 30 minutes on the day. Question papers and answer booklets are on paper, and answers are handwritten in ink (pencil is not accepted). There is no word limit, and you may write in continuous prose, bullet points or tables as long as your answer is clear to the reader.

Cambridge runs two sessions a year, usually on the first Wednesday of June and the first Wednesday of December. A different date is set for some sessions.

Marking and results

How the grade is decided

Grades and boundaries

The grade comes from your total across both papers, out of 200. The grades are Pass with Distinction, Pass with Merit, Pass and Fail. Grade boundaries are adjusted a little each session to account for the difficulty of the papers, and sit at roughly 100 marks for a Pass, 130 for a Merit and 150 for a Distinction.

Statement of results and certificate

The statement of results is issued about two months after the exam. The certificate follows about six weeks after that and reaches you through your centre. Enquiries on results and appeals are made through the centre.

Print may be small

Question papers reproduce source material as it is — coursebook pages, learner handwriting, newspaper articles. That print is often smaller than the rubric. If you need enlarged question papers, tell the centre well in advance, as they take time to arrange.
